Stella McCartney is synonymous with sustainability. Her commitment to ethical and sustainable luxury fashion has been a constant since the creation of the brand. But with her Fall 2020 collection, she takes it a step further. In it, she will include the first stretchy and biodegradable denim fabric.
The designer has been using 100% organic cotton in her denim garments since 2008. Additionally, she managed to eliminate toxic chemicals from her production and reduce water consumption by 70%. Characteristics that the denim in her Spring 2020 collection still retains.
Candiani, the Italian company behind Stella McCartney’s compostable denim
However, the collection that represents a true breakthrough is the one that will be released in May 2020. In it, she will include a line of jeans made with 100% compostable plant-based threads. This new fabric, conceived by the Italian company Candiani, is created using organic cotton wrapped in natural rubber and dyed with two new technologies that allow reducing water, energy, and chemical consumption. The result? A stretchy, biodegradable fabric free from plastics and microplastics.
In a world where resources are dwindling and landfills season after season are filled with discarded garments, it seems that the way forward is to create new biodegradable and compostable materials that do not participate in that cycle of irresponsible consumption.
The compostable denim line from Stella McCartney will be part of the brand’s Fall 2020 collection and will be available in both physical stores and online starting in May.
