Reinvent yourself in times of pandemic

We talked to Sergio Sancho, director and founder of Urvanity, who explains:

“Urvanity is to give a boost to give visibility to the galleries and artists to keep them going, a collective that has been unable to present their work for almost a year. It is our grain of sand to activate a sector that has been at a standstill.”

This edition will feature galleries such as New York’s PADRE Gallery, the Colombian Casa Cuadrada or the Cerquone Projects of Caracas. As for those in the country: the Barcelona Fousion Gallery, the Madrid-based Art District, Durán Monkey Gallery, Furiosa Gallery, La Causa Galería, My Name’s Lolita Art or Swinton Gallery and the Yusto/Giner and Reiners Contemporary Art.

Entre los patrocinadores está Caleido, Mahou y una colaboración con Joyería Suárez.

In the last edition a new section dedicated to spaces that are incorporated into the art scene, the Young Galleries, was implemented. This section will feature the Dutch Art 3035 or the Badr El Jundi. This edition will also feature the Walls program, which will leave in the city the most recent works of outstanding artists of the New Contemporary Art.

Horse: With the current situation, what problems have you encountered? Have you been able to bring the galleries and artists you had originally planned?

For this edition we foresaw that many of the foreign galleries would not be able to travel and we concentrated our efforts in making a more national recruitment to avoid possible problems. However, the galleries that have
from other countries, they are adapting
to the current measures.
Logically, we are working with much more
in advance in order to be able to resolve issues
bureaucratic hurdles have increased.

HORSE: How do you rate the virtual edition you did in February?
The truth is that the digital edition went quite well. It served as the launching of our new platform and we generated a lot of contacts with the galleries as well as some sales. Now in the May edition we will again give access to all the galleries so that they can have the option to access on-line and in person. We also launched the Urvanity Lab part, our bet for an e-commerce of limited editions created with artists and that has worked really well. We think this is here to stay and we will continue to bet on it.

Urvanity LAB is another novelty presented this year through the creation of serialized works of art by artists with the fair in order to reach new audiences and encourage collecting.

HORSE: What’s new at Urvanity compared to previous editions?

This year we have made a big bet on artists and galleries by putting a lot of effort in a program of acquisitions and residencies to contribute to the market in a hard and crucial moment. We thought it was the best way to support the sector after a blank year.
fairs at international level. There are many novelties at the artistic level. We have incorporated many new galleries and new artists that have not been shown before.
How would you encourage people to come and visit Urvanity?
We continue to be committed to a curated fair at the
that there is coherence in the proposals and where the
visitors can see and discover artists underrepresented at other national fairs.
I believe that a visit to Urvanity leaves no one indifferent.

It will also feature the Montó- Urvanity Walls Program, in which this year Case Maclaim, Helen Bur, Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada and Mario Mankey will participate with acquisition and residency awards from Colección SOLO, Montresso Art Foundation, the Nadine Foundation and the MER Collection.

Promoting New Contemporary Art in Spain

One of the objectives of this event is to vindicate diverse languages in popular culture which, since its emergence, has established a new dialogue with modernity reinforcing the current artistic panorama. This is why artistic expressions that emerged in urban contexts from the 1970s onwards are included. Post-graffiti, surrealist pop or new pop art are examples of this. More than 200 artists from the five continents have shown their work in previous editions.

Among them we find Banksy, JerkFace or D*Face. As well as great masters such as Queen Andrea, Miss Van, Dan Witz, Jan Kaláb or Sam3. Before the creation of Urvanity, in Spain there was no platform that brought to the public the New Contemporary Art that was already consolidated in France, the United States or Germany.

Among the sponsors of this edition are Martin Miller’s Gin, Mahou, Montó Pinturas, Madrid Capital de Moda and Hotel Only You de Atocha.
