The highglihts of May are full of great ideas to visit exhibitions inside museums that show us the most contemporary art, design and culture, and even what awaits us in the future. But there are also proposals outdoors, taking advantage of the good weather, and after cold and rainy months, the best season of the year begins. So we started our list with one of these proposals:
A very luxurious amusement park
We start our highlights of May in one of our favorite places: Paris. There we can find the Jardin d’Acclimatation in the Bois de Boulougne. It was created in 1860 and has been one of the recreational spaces for Parisians, due to its amusement park and programming. However, from May 1st, 2018 it enters a new phase thanks to the renovation of the group LVMH, the conglomerate of luxury companies that form Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton.
LVHM and the entertainment company Compagnie des Alpes have invested 60 million euros in a glamorous renovation of the Jardin d’Acclimatation. That is to say, that from May, children and adults will continue riding in the little train that runs through the park or sail in its pond, but the environment has changed; with new attractions and an elegant atmosphere that is the hallmark of the French giant of luxury.
Exhibition of photography and abstract art in the Tate Modern
The exhibition Shape of Light: 100 years of photography and abstract art at the Tate Modern in London will allow us to see the interrelation that the art of photography and abstract forms has had during the last century. Yes, because we relate abstraction with painting, but many of the visual and aesthetic experiments in this sense have been made with photos, and from an early moment with photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz or Man Ray.
But this exhibition not only stays in the artists of the past, there are also current figures of photography. Even the photographers Antony Cairns, Maya Rochat and Daisuke Yokota have created images for this interesting and revealing exhibition. Don’t miss it! It will open on May 2nd and will remain open until next October 14th.
Second edition of the Loewe Craft Prize
Last year’s edition of the Craft Prize organized by the Loewe Foundation was a real success and the finalists of that event showed their creative craft works in several exhibitions around the world (Madrid, New York and Tokyo). So the Foundation decided to make a second edition, in which the participation has been very high, with almost 2,000 works presented from practically every corner of the planet.
Among all of them, 30 finalists have been selected, and the final winner of the 50,000 euros will be announced next May 3rd. Then, from June 4th to 17th, that piece and the rest of the finalists can be contemplated in an exhibition at the Design Museum in London. A sample that had to be in our May highlights.
The MET Gala, an essential event in this highlights
Next May 7th, one of the most anticipated events of the New York high society will take place. The MET Gala 2018 will be held, which will once again fill the most elegant rooms of the Metropolitan Musem with glamor and fashion. The museum and its entrance become a monumental fashion show in which all assistants show off to go to the dinner for the benefit of The Costume Institue, which in a single night raises thousands and thousands of dollars to continue its work linked to fashion.
The MET Gala is always the starting point for an artistic exhibition at the Metropolitan in which the close links between art, culture, design and fashion are considered. And this year it promises to be very interesting and revealing. Just the title makes you want to see it: Celestial bodies, fashion and the Catholic imagination. A sample that will open to the public on May 10th and will remain open until October 8th, 2018. That is, a must see for anyone who visits NY in the upcoming months.
The most spring-like May highlight in Girona
Is there something more spring-like than flowers? The best way to enjoy this time of year is to surround yourself with the beauty of the flowers and their aromas. That is precisely what we are going to be able to do in a more than suggestive way in the streets of Girona, which from Saturday May 12th to the 20th will become a peculiar garden, with ephemeral floral tapestries.
That will be the 63rd edition of the Girona festival, temps de flors. A contest that over the years has become a meeting point for neighbors and their visitors, since it is not just an activity for florists and gardeners. Today, a large part of the population is involved in this event, whether creating the flower compositions or sharing their spaces. All this to celebrate the arrival of good weather in the most colorful way possible.
The future starts here
With this promising title: The future starts here, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London offers us a sample composed of more than 100 objects, which makes us think about what life will be like in the not so distant future. In fact, the curators of this show have been looking for three years in companies, universities or museums, those projects that are already very well defined, although they are not yet public, and that will can change our lives.
From May 12th until November 4th, 2018, this museum will be full of innovations that will be applied in our appliances, satellites, robots, energy sources,... More than a hundred innovative ideas that teach us where the future is going. Above all, it invites us to reflect on how to face it as individuals and a society. It’s not science fiction, it’s our life.
Once again, the Biennale Architettura 2018
It’s even year, and therefore the spaces dedicated to fairs and exhibitions of Giardini and the Arsenale of Venice have to host the Biennale Architettura 2018. This is going to be the last of our May highlights. Unlike her sister, the Biennale of Art, much older, this Biennale celebrates “only” its biannual edition number XVI, but that does not prevent it from being an essential appointment for all lovers of architecture and design.
On this occasion, the Bienal or Mostra Internazionale de Archittetura will begin next May 26th and will continue until November 25th, 2018. Practically 6 months for a contest that is inspired by the Freespace motto. A word that alludes to the fact that architecture does not stop being the modulation of space, and each proposal does it in one way. Something that can be verified with the exposed by the more than 70 participants in the official section of the Biennale di Venezia.
It is very difficult to find a better place to finish the spring highlights of May than the city of Venice. So, from Horse, we especially recommend that you enjoy the spring-summer season that comes!
