We are already at the end of the month, and as usual in Horse, we are going to make a few recommendations for all lovers of art, design, fashion and culture in its broadest sense. Here are our highlights for March.
Visit to Les Carrières de Lumières
The audiovisual show that every year floods Les Carrières des Lumières in the French Provence is trying to get better with each new edition. In 2018, they are trying to do it with a luminous and artistic show that will take us back to the 60s. A time in which Flower Power was much more than a trend; it became an authentic philosophy of life for many young people.
Possibly the immersive experience proposed this year by Les Carrières de Lumières reaches its maximum level thanks to the images of Pop culture, psychedelic and optical art and the covers of the Beatles or Jimi Hendrix. An emotional journey back in time that can be done from March 2nd and that will last until January 6th 2019.
Double presence of Martin Margiela in Paris
The Belgian Martin Margiela is going to be one of the greatest protagonists of the design exhibitions in Paris this year. In fact, this March he is the main star of two new exhibitions. The first one begins on March 3rd and will last until July 15th in the Parisian Palais Galliera. The second will take place in the Museum of Decorative Arts between March 22nd and September 2nd.
In the case of the Margiela/Galliera exhibition, is the first retrospective of the designer in Paris. We can see a review of a twenty-year trajectory between 1989 and 2009. The second one is titled “Margiela, Hermès years” and focuses on the period between 1997 and 2003 in which the designer collaborated with Hermès, providing innovative prêt-à-porter collections.
Bags and pockets from the Musem at Fit in New York
We are convinced that this will not be the last time that the Museum at Fit in New York will be in our highlights. It is an institution that calls itself “The most fashionable museum in NYC” and, therefore, we will keep an eye on the many exhibitions and events that promotes from its headquarters on Manhattan’s Seventh Avenue.
One of those exhibitions is the one that now occupies us: Pockets to Purses: Fashion + Function. This exhibition will last from March 6th to March 31st. It takes advantage of the collection of objects and design garments treasured by the Museum at Fit. The graduates of the Fashion and Textile Studies program will explain how bags and pockets have been adapted not only to the trends of each moment, but also to the needs of modern life.
The Serpentine Gallery again in our highlights
If the Museum at Fit in New York appears for the first time in Horse, the Serpentine Gallery in London is an old friend. It is in our highlights as well as in the article we recently dedicated to Frida Escobedo, the architect chosen to design the pavilion of this new edition that will start on March 6th and will continue until January 2019.
But besides this ephemeral construction, Kensington Gardens will host a very attractive artistic program. There we will find the works of contemporary artists of the first line such as Ian Cheng and his amazing live virtual simulations, or Sondra Perry with her productions of digital video and performances. There will be more artists like Tomma Abts or Peter Huyghe. Among the most awaited are Christo and Jeanne Claude who will show their work process to intervene on huge scales.
Dubai’s contemporary art fair
The leading contemporary art fair in the Middle East market today is Art Dubai, which this year will take place between March 21st and 24th. It is not a fair of local character; it has a global impact because galleries from dozens of countries, almost 80, will come. Collectors and visitors will get a pretty good idea of the current artistic landscape, especially in regions such as North Africa or South Asia, and obviously in the Middle East.
The truth is that Art Dubai is a medium fair if we compare it with the ones held in Europe or America. However, it has a very attractive program with events such as the Global Art Forum that this year will raise the link between automation and our daily lives. We must not forget the educational vocation that the fair has. They promote activities such as the Art Campus Dubai 6.0 where artists from different disciplines are trained for 6 months.
Max Lamb’s chairs
The English Max Lamb has in common with many designers the conception of the chair as a key element for the creation of furniture. For that reason, Lamb has designed more than 400 types of chairs. His most peculiar and charismatic chairs will be in the exhibition “Max Lamb: Exercises in Seating” that between March 22nd and August 26th will take place at the Art Institute of Chicago.
There, you can see how Lamb works with any material, whether if it is expensive or cheap, or natural or artificial. All of them can awaken his desire to design new forms. But yes, as a general rule, these are creations in limited quantities, and sometimes unique and tailoredmade. That is why it has that exclusive character. In order to understand that factor, the exhibition not only collects chairs, but also the entire creative process behind them.
The Art Basel of Hong Kong, the last of our March highlights
We finish the highlights of this month with the Asian edition of Art Basel, which takes place in Hong Kong. If we said that Art Dubai is a medium fair, this one is one of the largest contemporary art events in the world. The Asian version is a meeting that this year will bring together almost 250 art galleries.
The Art Basel HK 2018 will take place between the 29th and the 31st of March, and is the ideal occasion to buy or discover the art that is being created in these latitudes. Yes, because although there may be artistic productions from anywhere in the world, the truth is that the great protagonists are the Asian creators and the Pacific area. Besides the well-known talents, this is an excellent showcase for emerging artists, and that is why gallerists can make interesting bets for the future.
Here our highlights for the next 30 days. We hope you find at least one of them interesting and that encourages you to take a trip to experience it in the first person. However, if that is not possible, you can always follow these events on social networks or thanks to specialized media in this type of Premium experiences, such as Magazine Horse.
