The Salone del Mobile Milano 2021 is back, with some changes, but with the same essence. The Supersalone, curated by Stefano Boeri, has been hosting hundreds of design brands since 5 September. International and local architects and designers, as well as artists who are just starting out in the world of art.
This year, the space is smaller, as they have to comply with safety and security regulations. Even so, this year the fair is allowed to be visited by design lovers and professionals. The pieces are being displayed in a “library” fashion, meaning that on either side of the wide aisles the products are displayed on a flexible wall, and visitors can use a digital platform to purchase each item. Many new products will be on display until 10 September, it is a globally relevant event, and from the magazine, every year we review the new products. Join us to review some of them! .
Boca Do Lobo: lujo y productos exclusivos
We start the Supersalone news with Boca Do Lobo, which presents different new exclusive furniture designs. On the one hand, the Halo mirror, on the other hand, two types of lamps, and the Oblongo bar cabinet. Halo is composed of three mirrors of different sizes and a golden frame perfect to give an elegant touch to the interiors. The two lamps are Hera Round II Suspension and Hera Suspension, their names inspired by the Greek goddess, mother of nature and magical inspiration. The light fittings are moulded and designed to represent golden branches, are chandelier-shaped, with contemporary detailing and are handcrafted from cast brass.
The Obolongo Bar is another of the brand’s novelties, a design that fuses modern and classic elements in a limited edition piece of furniture, with great details and exquisiteness. Handmade by the best artisans of Boca Do Lobo, the luxury cabinet was born from the use of production methods developed to offer the highest quality. The frame has been created with wood covered with metallic elements, and a mirror inside, all finished in black gold.
Nanimarquina: betting on sustainability
Nanimarquina returns to Milan with a new collection of differentiated rugs, as the Catalan firm has created a new design in an artisanal way so that its pieces are flexible with sustainability. All the rugs are created in India and Pakistan by artisans who master the techniques of their own region, touch different materials and work with different techniques, and Nanimarquina learns from them. In this way, the result is unique pieces that combine tradition with modernity, and help to preserve the diversity of the world’s cultures.
Since 2002, the brand has been at the forefront of supporting education and health with the Care&Fair project, and in 2013 they incorporated Eco-sheen&Jutex, biodegradable and chemical-free products in the different work processes. They want to make sure they offer the best parts, guaranteeing personal and environmental safety.
Marinelli Home: Japanese tradition represented in its fabrics
Giovanni Peace Marinelli Home has brought the Butterfly modular sofa to the exhibition. Each platform can be combined, positioned or removed as you wish. You can create your own sofa continuously, and decorate your home in the best way.
The sofa has been created with the inspiration of Puccini’s opera, its fabrics are reminiscent of Italian tailoring, but on the other hand of Japanese kimono. The designer complements and enriches his work with the union of the two cultures, making a sofa that will always be present regardless of the era.
Colombo Mobili: Nomad Collection
The Colombo Mobili firm returns to Milan for another year with new novelties, one of which is the NoMad collection. Designed and coordinated by Alvin Grassi, who wanted to unite past and present, metropolitan and nomadic roots;
The collection is made up of different types of sofas, tables, chairs, beds or mirrors all with the same details, and colours of wood and white. The designer himself highlights his way of working; his passion for beauty and his mania for choosing the best materials that give a timeless result.
Roverto Cavalli Home: glamorous proposal with soul
Roberto Cavalli Home Interiors is present in the living room, presenting different pieces of furniture, including the new Clifton sofa collection. Cavalli has always represented his work with bright colours, fashionable details and animals. Always thinking from a glamorous proposal, with soft materials and with its own style. One of them is the sofa Unlimited, a piece of furniture with a poplar and pine wood structure. It is covered with fabric or leather, and the back cushions are made of goose down.
Hermès: artisanal soul
The Hermès returns to the Salone del Mobile Milano 2021, this year, the material continues to be primordial in its new collections for the home. The brand feels that each line or detail has a life of its own, and expresses and builds things for the future. The novelties play with raw and natural materials, and bring unique savoir-faire. The softness of the paper microfibre armchairs, the purity of the chiselled stone tables or the meticulous work of the craftsmen stand out.
Like many of the renowned brands, they mix tradition and innovation, challenging the limits of creativity and reinventing leather, fabrics and metals. In addition, the style of the pieces demonstrates simplicity in elegance, and leaves room for sophistication and comfort. One of the examples is the d’Hermès chair, an organic-shaped seat that comes from the imagination of Studio Mumbai. Its frame is made of wood and its upholstery of cellulose microfibre, it is also hand-painted, making it a unique piece.
On the other hand, the Sialk centrepieces are another handmade novelty. They are made from a sheet of copper and stencilled with enamel. To create them, time and tranquillity are needed, so that the firing results in a unique piece.
Fratelli Boffi:
The Archway table was designed by Cristián Mohaded for Fratelli Boffi. The table is characterised by clean lines and harmonious shapes. A presence that is enhanced by the high quality of the materials used. The birch and mahogany woods have been selected for the surface, which is joined by solid mahogany edges, finished in a glossy finish. This same finish highlights the contour of the base, composed of arches that rise and undulate, thus creating a solid structure.
COM.P.A.R: subtlety and elegance in its pieces
Japanese influence resides more and more in the West and the Italian house COM.P.A.R has brought to Milan a couple of pieces of furniture inspired by it. On the one hand, the Origami table, as its name suggests, its shapes amaze visitors. The surface is made of emperor ceramic with a matt finish, and subtly defines its lines and curves.
On the other hand, a small coat rack, Charlie, an accessory created to detail, perfect for hanging any garment or accessory that is worn. This piece of furniture is designed to optimise space and make maximum use of it.
The choice of materials and workmanship in a sustainable way is something that represents the brand, which has been at the core of its identity since 1984. Thus, they are able to create and define ranges of products for the home and characteristic work spaces. Objects that they want to be a bridge between experience and new production technologies.
Calligaris: in search of relaxation and comfort
Other novelties we find are the products launched by the Italian brand Calligaris. The new collection is full of armchairs, beds, or chairs, for example, the Comfy armchair is a perfect product for the best rest. An individual armchair designed in a contemporary and minimalist way, which is composed of three upholstered parts that guarantee a relaxing experience.
Some of the chairs on display are Oleandro and Quadrotta, designed by Archirivolto. The first of these is a chair with plenty of padding to maintain comfort and with a wooden base. The stylistic detail of this model is the outer part of the backrest, where the wooden structure has been delicately worked until it is flattened. Furthermore, Oleandro has different types of upholstery;
Quadrotta has been designed in an old-fashioned way but with a modern vision, a contrast that combines its minimalist style and mid-century elegance. It is made up of small handcrafted details that make this piece perfect for the home. Of beds we can find the one designed by Stefano Spessotto, LeMarais, a modern, simple and elegant piece inspired by Art Deco, but with a contemporary touch. Its metal base is enhanced by the structure of the wide headboard.
Midj: multidimensionality in the designs
The collection of P47 chairs comes from Midj, who embraced the idea of the designer Franco Poli, with his designs inspired by the multidimensionality of the universe. Leather is the protagonist in the pieces, applied directly to the frame and anchored with visible rivets. In this way, the final product creates a play of tensions that guarantees better comfort, and at the same time, gives it a sophisticated aesthetic.
Hide leather is a very complex material due to its natural and elastic characteristics, its design and creation has required treating it very delicately so as not to damage it. In addition, this collection is very innovative, not only for its material, but also for its aesthetics, using leather as a net to create the backrest.
This collection, apart from chairs, also includes armchairs, sofas, coffee tables, stools and footrests.
