The house of Chanel has collaborated on one of the most anticipated films of the summer, Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig and produced by and starring Margot Robbie.

Barbie has arrived in cinemas The long-awaited film about Mattel’s most famous doll is now a reality and is making waves around the world. The film starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken opened on 21 July and has grossed more than 300 million in its first weekend. And no wonder; the cast, the plot and the aesthetics are the perfect combination for a blockbuster.

The costume director Jacqueline Durran, winner of two Oscars for her work on Anna Karenina and Little Women, was in charge of Barbie’s wardrobe. With pink as the protagonist and Margot Robbie being Chanel’s ambassador since 2018, the collaboration of the French firm could not be missing in the film. Throughout the history of cinema, Chanel has been a preferred partner. In its latest partnership, the Maison worked side by side with Barbie’s creatives to create various total looks for the main characters.

5 Chanel total looks seen in the movie

We will see on screenfive silhouettes (three suits, a ski suit and a dress) imagined by Virginie Viard, along with padded bags and accessories such as sunglasses and costume jewellery. Durran received a selection of outfits in various shades of pink from the Ready-to-Wear Coco Beach and Coco Neige collections. All the outfits were chosen to highlight Barbie’s character as she progresses through her journey in the film.

Margot Robbie tells us some curiosities about Chanel’s wardrobe and what it represents in the film.

The actress says that she wore outfits modelled by supermodel Claudia Schiffer and even found a small name tag on one of the archive outfits. She says that it is a very, very funny film, surprisingly emotional and at the same time very beautiful to watch.
