The L’Oréal Group reinforces its commitment to sustainability, the environment, and the future through projects like Biotherm, among others, to help the planet.

Biotherm “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans”

The L’Oréal Group is dedicated to environmental preservation with the “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” project. Created by Biotherm and the Ecoalf Foundation in 2020, the initiative works towards conserving aquatic ecosystems. After this initial work, “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” has progressed further. Following the completion of its work on the Jarama River, in 2022, it moved to the Tajo River to continue its significant task. Through the Tajo River, it reaches the ocean, the ultimate goal of this plan: to care for the source, namely the rivers, so that the riverbeds can flow into the oceans in better condition.

The activity carried out on the Tajo River revolves around the creation of a large barrier that serves as a tool to collect a large amount of organic matter. All types of waste will be removed: from large objects to small pieces of plastic floating in the river.

The unsustainable actions of humans have turned river spaces into veritable chemical dumps. The excess waste that rivers endure is subsequently transferred to the oceans, contaminating all aquatic ecosystems. It is estimated that over 15 million tons of plastic waste land in the ocean each year.

Plastic waste in the oceans

From November 2020 until now, “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” has been able to collect over 11 tons of waste and clean up debris from an area equivalent to 35 football fields. All this has been possible thanks to more than 700 volunteers and the team of experts who have participated in the initiative altruistically.

The next activities that the L’Oréal Group will carry out to help the survival of rivers by cleaning up waste will be on August 27th in Aranjuez, September 17th in San Martín De la Vega, and October 15th in Velilla de San Antonio. Additionally, on October 22nd, there will be a removal of invasive species in Rivas Vaciamadrid.

L’Oréal Paris has published its 2022 Sustainable Development Report and reinforces its environmental commitments with its program L’Oréal for the future: Because our planet is worth it.” By 2030, it is committed to halving the carbon footprint of its products sold. The brand will also invest €10 million over the next five years in environmental projects that will protect and restore biodiversity, as well as support local communities, especially women.

Facts and figures: Achievements of L’Oréal Paris in sustainability

In terms of sustainability, L’Oréal Paris has achieved several milestones since 2020. Currently, 94% of new products have improved their lifecycle. Regarding packaging, in 2020, they achieved that 100% of Elvive shampoo and conditioner bottles were made from 100% recycled plastic. In 2021, 77% of PET plastic was recycled, and they have 15 carbon-neutral factories out of 25.

By 2030, the aim is for 100% of packaging plastic to come from recycled or bio-based materials, as well as to reduce the amount of packaging used by 20%. The raw materials and minerals in their product formulas will be 100% renewable and sustainably sourced. They also aim to reduce CO2 emissions per product by 50% and their intensity related to product transportation.
