In the October highlights that we have selected for the coming weeks, the artistic character predominates in all the proposals. Of course, with a variety of styles, forms and periods. And the cities and countries where each of the exhibitions we recommend are taking place are also different. Read on and discover each one of them.
Rob Wynne’s facilities
The first of our October highlights takes us to Brooklyn, to the museum of this emblematic New York borough. The Float exhibition by the American artist Rob Wynne arrived there on the 6th of June and will remain there until March next year. So if you’re travelling to the Big Apple over the next few months, make a note of this appointment.
This exhibition focuses on Rob Wynne’s latest works, in which he has primarily used glass. Mirrored glass that he pours by hand to create sinuous forms or phrases, sometimes with obvious meaning, sometimes thought-provoking. But they always float among works by other artists and other times, complementing them and inviting us to experience art.
Frida Kahlo in the October Highlights
Also in June the exhibition Frida Kahlo: making her self up opened at the Victoria and Albert in London. But in this case we have less time left to enjoy this exhibition, as it will close on the 4th of November. Don’t miss it, because here you will understand why the personality of the Mexican artist is so fascinating.
Frida Kahlo has become an icon for women all over the world for standing out in a man’s world, and for doing so with her physical condition impaired after the terrible accident she suffered in 1925, which left her with serious after-effects for life. In short, to find out how she painted, how she lived, how she dressed, how she made herself up, how she loved, visit this exhibition.
200 works by Franz West at the Pompidou Centre in Paris
Now the October highlights take us to Paris, to the always interesting and surprising Centre Pompidou. And this time because a huge retrospective of the Austrian artist Franz West is taking place there. The exhibition opened on 12 September and will occupy part of the Forum on the ground floor and some rooms on floor 6 until 10 December.
Franz West (1947 – 2012) was a completely independent artist. He was undoubtedly a highly individualistic and unclassifiable character, who worked above all in the art of sculpture. But at a time when industrial materials such as concrete or steel are used, he preferred a different kind of sensation. That is why many of his works are made of papier-mâché, and in them he plays with the ideas of beauty and ugliness. More than interesting!
Tamara de Lempicka in Madrid
The painting of Tamara de Lempicka had a totally different character. The painter of glamour, elegance and the essence of Art Deco, which was so popular with the upper classes of the 20th century. Her portraits and also her nudes fascinated the high society of Europe and the United States. Many of them can now be seen in this exhibition in Madrid.
The works of Tamara de Lempicka await you at Madrid’s Palacio Gaviria from 5 October until 24 February 2019. It is like coming full circle, as the artist visited Spain in 1932 and was fascinated by the country’s art. So if you visit this exhibition, you can observe her paintings looking for the Hispanic influence in her canvases.
New exhibition by Chema Madoz
We are still in Madrid, but now at the Galería Elvira González, where the photographs of Chema Madoz, undoubtedly one of the most prestigious photographers on the current scene, are once again on display. An artist who never stops working, and who from 13 September until 10 November will be showing her most recent work in this Madrid gallery.
These are photographs in the author’s characteristic black and white, and as he does on other occasions shows us objects completely out of context, to place them in another setting and give them a new meaning. The photographer changes the meaning of the objects. But he proposes that it is the spectators who give the ultimate meaning to the photo.
End of October highlights at the Barcelona Disseny Hub
We would like to end this bouquet of proposals by inviting you to discover a very close place with a programme where innovation and creativity always have a place. We are talking about the Barcelona Disseny Hub, whose location could not be any other than the 22@ district.
Throughout the year, activities, exhibitions and events of interest are programmed. And as proof of this, it is enough to see the intense menu prepared for this month. On 5 October, the exhibition of the contemporary jewellery awards concludes, complemented by the exhibition dedicated to the jeweller Ramón Puig Cuyàs. Or throughout the month the exhibition will be showing what the wood of the future will be like. That and much more, including a temporary exhibition until 22 October that promises to show you “The best design in the world“, no more and no less.
In short, as we were saying, October’s highlights are full of art and design. Activities to delight, entertain, reflect and inspire us. From Horse Magazine as always we invite you to enjoy them.
