Our recommendations are back in the form of February’s highlights. Some appointments for the most varied appetites. There are proposals for fashion, painting, photography, sculpture,? even ice sculptures. And as always in places near and far. Let’s take a look at them:
The biggest highlight of February in Barcelona
The 080 Barcelona Fashion returns in 2019 to Barcelona, and it is already its 23rd edition. It will return between 4 and 8 February, and the great Catalan fashion catwalk can be enjoyed at the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. This will be the meeting point for designers and buyers from all over the world. It will also be attended by the best of the specialised press and influencers.
The agenda of the event is very tight this time. The fashion shows are going to follow one after the other, up to 28 in four days. But if the catwalk is the most dynamic showcase, perhaps the most practical from a commercial point of view is the showroom where brands, designers, marketers and also design students create alliances for the future.
Ice made art in Sapporo
The Sapporo Snow Festival on the Japanese island of Hokkaido is one of those events characteristic of Far Eastern cultures. It is a great festival centred on the creation of ephemeral ice sculptures. Ephemeral but beautiful and cared for down to the last detail. If you want to see a demonstration of Japanese delicacy, this is a good place to experience it.
It is no wonder that this Sapporo Festival is a landmark in the Japanese winter calendar. In fact, the 2019 edition, which will take place between 4-11 February, will be the 70th time such an event will be held. And it all began in 1950 with the creation by students of snow figures in Odori Park. Today the same park is home to icy sculptures up to 15 metres high, which are illuminated with special lighting.
Brancusi in New York
We continue our trip around the world in search of the best highlights of February and we arrive in New York. More specifically to one of its great jewels, the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA. There, on its first floor, the exhibition Constantine Brancusi Sculpture can be seen until 18 February. An exhibition with a selection of 11 works by one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century.
But it is not only some of his works that will be shown together for the first time. In addition, those who are most passionate about the life of this Romanian artist will be able to enjoy his drawings, photos and even films. Not forgetting that during the visit you can listen to the music that the artist listened to. In other words, an ideal environment in which to let Brancusi’s creations inspire us.
Art and Performance with Van Gogh Alive – The Experience
The great Christmas present that Madrid received was the arrival of the exhibition Van Gogh Alive – The Experience at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. The exhibition opened on 26 December last year and will remain open until 26 February. If you haven’t visited it, don’t delay. And we recommend you to order tickets in advance, because they are sold out.
The reason for this February highlights is that we are talking about a show that combines the latest technologies and the most innovative projection systems with the unique art of the Dutch painter. When you see it, you understand why the experience of enjoying the paintings of Van Gogh Alive has already been a success in various museums around the world, where it has been enjoyed by millions of people. Are you going to miss it?
ARCO, once again in February’s highlights
ARCOmadrid is already a classic in Horse’s February highlights. In this edition the contemporary art fair will take place between 27 February and 3 March, as always occupying the pavilions of IFEMA. More than 200 galleries from three dozen countries will showcase the latest in international art.
But of all these countries, one will have a special prominence at ARCO 2019. It will be Peru, this year’s guest of honour. The fair even presented its programme last November in Lima, the Peruvian capital. It is undoubtedly an example of the commitment that in recent years has been made to Latin American contemporary art, where creators of unquestionable personality and extraordinary projection are emerging.
Fashion and the back
Once again we move from the world of art to the world of fashion. This time, our February highlights travel to Brussels, to the Museum of Fashion and Lace in the European capital. In this museum located in the beautiful Grand Place there is a surprising exhibition. We are used to seeing fashion from a frontal point of view. Well, here it is about seeing fashion from the back. This is the name of the Fashion from Behind exhibition.
Since this exhibition opened last November it has attracted attention that Balenciaga and Chanel designs were mixed with other garments such as Jean Paul Gautier corsets or a Zara jacket worn by Melania Trump. In short, a very different vision of the creators, of their creations and of those who wear them. A vision that offers more than you might expect and that you can see until 31 March.
We end up looking at photos in Berlin
The German capital is home to the Helmut Newton Foundation, named after the famous photographer, considered one of the great portraitists of modernity. This centre constantly generates photography exhibitions and the time has finally come to tell you about one of them in our February highlights. You will have the chance to see this exhibition until 19 May.
It is actually a triple exhibition where we will be able to enjoy nude photos of three very different geniuses. There are the nudes treasured by Harper’s Bazaar photographer Saul Leiter. On the other hand there are the always interesting images of the disturbing film director David Lynch. And finally, there are the nude photos of Newton himself, which he sometimes took for pleasure and sometimes as part of his fashion reports.
Nothing more, nothing less. A range of wonderful proposals. Some of them you will be lucky enough to experience first hand. But if it is not possible, from Horse we recommend you to take advantage of the possibilities of the virtual and browse the links that we include here. Enjoy it!
