Many swimwear brands are committed to sustainability by using recycled and eco-friendly materials. In this selection we talk about sustainable swimwear from Bohodot, Now_Then, Belamer, Reset Priority and I love be love.

With the arrival of summer, most of us dream of being on the beach and feeling comfortable in the swimming costume of our choice. There are many types of swimsuits, as many as there are profiles and tastes. But beyond design, swimwear fashion shows us that one of its main concerns must be the environment. This is explained by the fact that conventional swimming costumes are usually made of synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester, derived from petroleum. Their production emits large amounts of greenhouse gases and requires a lot of energy and water. In addition, many of these swimming costumes contain harmful chemicals, such as azo dyes, which pose a health risk. Against this backdrop, many brands are committed to creating sustainable swimwear using recycled and eco-friendly materials. In this selection we have prepared we talk about Bohodot, Now_Then, Belamer, Reset Priority and I love be love. Moreover, many of these brands are from Barcelona.

Now_Then

With a style that the brand itself defines as eco-luxury, Now_Then is committed to the most sustainable materials. In fact, they are associated with the ECONYL® project, recycling rubbish rescued from the sea, such as fishing nets and other waste materials to give them a second life in the form of new fabrics. With each swimming costume they produce, they recycle up to 300 grams of marine litter. This allows them to reduce raw material consumption and contribute to the cleanliness of the ocean. In addition, all the fabrics they use are OEKTOKEX 100 certified.

Another of the materials used is neoprene, which in the brand’s case is sustainable, as it replaces petroleum with calcareous mineral, a much more abundant and environmentally friendly raw material. In particular, it retains less water and is lighter and more elastic.

Another characteristic of the brand is that its productions are small-scale, collaborating with local companies and prioritising quality and ethics.

Belamer

Sisters Maria and Marta decided to embark on this adventure to create conscious designs for women who value and respect nature and seek a more responsible approach to consumption.

Belamer-Magazine-Horse

Belamer is a project of Maria and Marta.

With a philosophy based on “less is more”, their values are simplicity, sensuality and sustainability in each of their designs. Precisely to promote this sustainability, they use only high quality recycled materials from Spain and Italy. This is the case of recycled fibres, such as the nylon they use, which is certified with the OEKO TEX Standard 100 and the Global Recycle Standard. They also use linen, BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton or dead fabrics from other factories in the case of the tote bags, thus reusing surplus textile waste.

Reset Priority

It is a swimwear and beachwear brand with a contemporary and elegant design. It was born in 2013 in Barcelona and is characterised by having pieces in which OEKO-TEX certified materials are used. They also take into account the durability factor, thanks to the use of Xtra Life Lycra®, a fibre designed to maintain its elasticity over time, as it is 10 times more resistant to chlorine, heat, sun creams and oils than other untreated fibres.

Reset Priority uses Xtra Life Lycra®.

They also promote recycled materials through their partnership with ECONYL®, which uses a nylon regenerated from fishing nets scattered in the oceans and plastic bottles that would otherwise have ended up in landfills.
Another recycled material is Cupro, a regenerated cellulose fibre produced by treating cotton fibre with cuprammonium salt. It is also known as artificial silk.

I love be love

With roots in Almeria and founded by Carmen and Eduardo, I love be love makes its designs in a local workshop which is actually a family business with more than 15 years of experience in the sector.

Belove-Ecoswimwear-Magazine-Horse-

I love be love is a project that has its roots in Almería.

In addition to this, the sustainability of the brand is based on the use of regenerated Italian premium fabrics, which are certified organic and are mainly made from ECONYL®.
The rest of the swimwear components (woven labels, rings…) come from Spain.

Bohodot

This Barcelona-based brand was founded in 2012 by Peque and Cris, mother and daughter. They have a clear commitment to sustainable fabrics and materials, as well as a totally local production, with Spanish workshops and suppliers. Specifically, more than 70% of their fabrics come from recycled nylon made from plastic waste (bottles, fishing nets…) found in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, they only work with fabrics that have the OEKO TEX STANDARD 100 certificate, which guarantees the responsible use of chemical products.
