For Magazine Horse the return of summer is represented by the publication of our highlights for September, the recommendations to make the return to everyday life much more pleasant. And also so that those lucky enough to still be enjoying a few days’ holiday have some extremely interesting options for their coveted leisure time. So here they go:
Balenciaga and Spanish painting
It is not the first time we talk about the great Basque couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga, nor will it be the last. Now, in the highlights for September, the reason is the exhibition that until 22 September can be seen at the Museo Thyssen de Madrid. An exhibition in which his own models are compared with the Spanish paintings that inspired his creations.
In this way we can see how some of his most recognisable party dresses have echoes of the great masters of painting, from El Greco to Zuloaga, including Velázquez, Zurbarán, Murillo and Goya, among others. An exhibition to admire the vast culture of the designer from Getaria, and also to realise how culture always feeds back.
Picasso and photography
Another exhibition that has been open throughout the summer and will close in September, specifically on 24 September. And another exhibition that brings together several geniuses, the greatest of all Pablo Picasso and behind him the different photographers who took snapshots of him throughout his life.
With all this in mind, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona offers us the exhibition Picasso, the photographer’s gaze. An opportunity to see how other creators saw the great artist of the 20th century. And also to discover how he saw himself, through his attitudes, his poses, his hands and above all his unmistakable eyes.
One of the highlights for September in NY
The Big Apple is one of the meccas of contemporary culture, which is why it is a regular in this section. So once again it appears in the highlights for September to recommend a visit to the Met Breuer, where until 29 September there is an exhibition that is as different as it is exquisite and suggestive. It is entitled Phenomenal Nature.
This is an exhibition of more than 50 sculptures by the Indian artist Mrinalini Mukherjee in which we can see his particular creative universe in which ceramic and textile materials come together. His aesthetic references are always the forms of nature and also the craft traditions of his country, filtered through the sieve of modernity.
30 years of the Serralves Foundation in Porto
The Serralves Foundation is one of the most dynamic and interesting cultural institutions in Porto, and we could even say in the whole of Portugal. An intense history of activities and exhibitions that in 2019 celebrates its 30th anniversary, and the Foundation has wanted to celebrate it in style, both at the Foundation’s own headquarters and in other spaces in the city. To do so, it has prepared the macro-exhibition Journey to the Beginning. There and back.
The work of some of the artists who are already part of the Foundation’s history can be seen at the Serralves Museum until 3 November. But as the spirit is to share this art with fellow citizens, the exhibition will also have an offshoot in the Oporto City Hall and, so that visitors can also enjoy this anniversary, another exhibition space will be the Leixoes Cruise Terminal.
The legend and work of Keith Haring comes to Liverpool
One of the big stars of these highlights for September is the exhibition on Keith Haring that is programmed at the Tate Liverpool until 10 November. In it, a survey of his entire artistic career is presented. Despite the short life of this artist, who died in 1990 at the age of just 32, his work is very interesting and varied.
Haring represented the most underground culture of the 1980s with paintings, graffiti, posters, album covers for artists such as Bowie, audiovisual projects and interventions in the world of fashion, accompanied by characters such as Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. But despite the hedonistic image of certain projects, he was a true activist, denouncing the problems of his time, such as homophobia, drugs, AIDS, capitalism and environmental policies.
With your back to fashion
We have already told you about this exhibition dedicated to the back. It was when it was shown at the Museum of Fashion and Lace in Brussels. For those of you who weren’t lucky enough to see it, now we remind you of it in the highlights for September, as it has been on display at the Museum Bourdelle in Paris all summer and will remain there until 17 November.
Fashion is often obsessed with a front view only, or at best with profile views. However, the back, the back, is very important. And even more so if you see certain garments next to the sculptures of the artist Antoine Bourdelle, creator of sculptural bodies, never better said.
The relevance of the Bauhaus
All the exhibitions we have talked about in these highlights for September have been open all summer months. So let’s finish with one that hasn’t opened yet. It is the one that will open on 6 September in Berlin and will not close until next year, specifically on 27 January 2020.
The title is Original Bauhaus and is an exhibition organised by the Berlinische Galerie, in which it is demonstrated that with only 14 years of Bauhaus activity in Germany its influence is still current in many creators. There is no doubt that there are many works and ideas that are much more current than we imagine.
In short, this exhibition and the rest of the ones we recommend meet several of the requirements of Magazine Horse’s proposals. Proposals in which not only the visual and aesthetic delight is important, we also like that what you see provokes reflection and, if possible, inspires you.
