The Misui Space in Barcelona hosts the unique exhibition of contemporary jewellery “Jewels that speak of jewels” by Pilar Garrigosa from 27 September to 11 October.
The exhibition brings together for the first time contemporary pieces by the artist, as well as an unpublished selection from her collection of Italian artists from the late 20th century and early 21st century.
The title of the exhibition refers to the dialogue that Garrigosa, who owns the largest collection of contemporary jewellery in Spain, establishes with his creations and those of many other artists such as Giampaolo Babeto or Annamaria Zanella, all references of the Intituto Pietro Selvatico di Pádova art school of the 60s, 80s, 90s, 2000 and 2010. Garrigosa finds creativity even in the most mundane and practised artistic disciplines of many kinds, such as jewellery, painting and ceramics.
All about the exhibition
All the pieces in the exhibition are part of Pilar Garrigosa’s personal collection. “This collection began, as many collections begin, with a crush,” Garrigosa confesses.
Strolling through Montreal in the autumn of 1987, I came across a gallery of contemporary art jewellery. It was Jocelyne Gobeil’s gallery and in the showcase there was a type of jewellery I had never seen before. I fell madly in love with a silver necklace by Barbara Stutman. I couldn’t resist and bought it.
Pilar’s work incorporates the pillars of traditional jewellery with those of contemporary jewellery:
I have a collection of more than 200 pieces by some 30 authors from 20 countries, such as Japan, the United States, France and Italy. I have pieces in all kinds of materials, such as gold, fabric, cardboard and plastic, she says.
She has always had a special interest in all things artistic, and in addition to jewellery, she loves painting:
In my spare time, when I’m not painting, I’m hooked on classes in contemporary art history and Middle Eastern geopolitics.
Mar Juan Tortosa, who holds a doctorate in art and specialises in contemporary jewellery, is the curator of the exhibition. On the creations of this jeweller and gemmologist with a sensitive eye, “the gems and metals have been dictating to her the most suitable shapes, compositions and textures”, she says.
Misui’s exhibition brings together 72 of his own pieces and 18 pieces by other authors. Rings, brooches, bracelets, earrings and necklaces make up a snapshot of a part of contemporary European jewellery of the last 70 years. Pilar Garrigosa’s creations, as well as being on display, will be on sale.
