The year 2024 is a key date for Paris. It will be the capital and protagonist of the Olympic Games, and before they start, they aim to make Paris synonymous with sustainability.
The climate emergency is urgent and industries are becoming aware and adapting their production model to this new global scenario. The urban industry has also joined this green movement, and in this article we will explain the three initiatives that the city of Paris is taking to become a sustainable city.
The Eiffel Tower, Trocadero Project
The year 2024 is a very important year for the city of Paris. This year, apart from being the capital that will host the Olympic Games, it will also be the year where many of the city’s sustainable projects will see the light of day. Paris is committed to welcoming its visitors with a much greener city.
One of the most important projects is the planning of a garden that will link the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower with the aim of promoting a city that conveys a more pleasant experience for both the tourist and the resident. They aim to make the heart of Paris blossom with this green zone.
The territory will be transformed in such a way that green zones will be created both to make walking more pleasant and to make transport more environmentally friendly. More priority will be given to pedestrians and public transport in order to facilitate the movement of the 30 million visitors to the Eiffel Tower each year.
Place de la Concorde, Extraordinary garden
Another goal for 2024 is to change the Place de la Concorde. This project is organised in two phases, the first one encompassing the Place de la Concorde and the second one focusing on the Avenue des Champs Elysées.
This project created by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, is called ” extraordinary garden”. This desire to turn the city into a green city will be fuelled by halving the number of traffic lanes.
The area around the Arc de Triomphe will be redesigned and transformed according to the seasons. This idea will transform the area into a garden in spring, a skating rink in winter, and even a beach in summer. So the Place de la Concorde will be partially pedestrianised, and there are also plans to plant 360 trees.
Paris a sustainable city: a bicycle city, project RER V
In Paris, a total of 50 km of bicycle lanes have been built and about 100 km in the inner suburbs. The problem is that these cycle paths were built for a temporary purpose. So the city’s proposal wants to turn the temporary lanes into permanent lanes. This project has the nice goal of extending the Parisian cycling network.
This project, christened “project RER V-Réseau Express Régional Vélo” , is an impulse that aims to solve the problem of road and public transport congestion. In Paris, 9 new lines will be added to the cycle network, giving the city a total of 650 km of new lines. These lanes will help connect transport lines between the centres of the Paris region. The construction of these is planned in two phases: The first will start around 2024/2025 with the construction of 5 of the lines, and the second will end in 2030 with all nine lines built.
Paris has already taken the leap to reshape several urban and tourist areas to become a more sustainable city, and as a consequence, an example to follow. We must urgently become aware that from beginning to end, in every street, on every terrace and in every season, the planet is everyone’s home and we must all take care of it.
