1-Met Gala 2017

On May 1st, one of the most anticipated events of the New York social calendar will take place: the Met Gala. An event that The Costume Institute has organized since 1948 and that consists of a charity gala held at the Metropolitan Museum. The greatest personalities of fashion, culture, art and American social life attend to it. Each year this gala has different hosts, and this time the honor goes to the musicians Pharrell Williams and Kate Perry, besides Ana Wintour, editor of Vogue.

In addition, this gala that will mean the opening of an impressive exhibition about the Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. In this way, the Metropolitan Museum in New York will host the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between, a sample in which we can observe more than 100 creations of one of the most transgressive and inspiring designers of recent decades. Thus, although we are not able to attend the expected gala, at least we can visit this exhibition until September 4th, getting to know the atmosphere of elegance that gives off the most glamorous event, the Met Gala.

2-Larry Fink’s exhibition in the Armani/Silos building

On March 29th, the photographic exhibition The Beats and The Vanities of Larry Fink was inaugurated in the Armani/Silos building in Milan. An exhibition that is actually two, because for the first time these two very different works of the American photographer meet. On the one hand, images of The Beats can be seen, taken in the 50s during a long hitchhiked trip around the US. Secondly, there will be over 70 photos of The Vanities series taken between 2000 and 2009 in different parties of Vanity Fair and Hollywood.

Two very different works, but both highly appreciated by Giorgio Armani, who never tires of praising Larry Fink’s photograph. He is very proud to present these photos until July 30th in the halls of his beloved Armani/Silos building.  Some old Milanese warehouses located in Via Bergognone, 40, which the Italian designer has turned into an interesting cultural proposal, as well as becoming the seat of the digital file of his brand.

3-The American Dream pop to the present in the British Museum

From March 9th to June 18th, 2017, the British Museum in London becomes the best place to understand the cultural and artistic influence of the United States since the mid-twentieth century. There through its most distinguished artists we can review its history, which is partly ours, with events like the Vietnam War, 11-S or the arrival of Donald Trump to the power. And all this seen through the eyes of artists.

Top artists like those of the pop generation of Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns or Robert Rauscheberg. But we can find current trends as the ones of Julie Mehretu and Kara Walker. The first with an art of abstract character, and the second with creations linked to our days and our concerns, such as violence, sexuality or gender. That is, this exhibition proposes an artistic journey to the United States and all that without leaving London.

4-Girona, temps de flors

If it would be necessary to seek an excuse to travel to Girona, here is an ideal one. Between day May 13th and 21st we have the 62nd edition of the festival Girona, Temps de Flors. What does this mean? That during those days the Barri Vell, its gardens, patios, monuments and streets will be literally enveloped by thousands of flowers, giving the city a special color and, especially, unique fragrances.

Since 1955, this event has been held, although since that year the event has grown exponentially to become nowadays an important event for the city and for all those who love flowers and gardening. In fact, during the days of Girona, Temps de Flors, the number of visitors doubles the population.

5- The Venice Biennale

This 2017 the pavilions surrounding the Giardini Arsenal will host once again the International Biennial of Art in Venice. In this occasion with a show that will start on May 13th until November 26th, 2017. Enough time to enjoy the most current art showed in this 57th edition of the event.

In total, the work of 120 artists from 51 countries will reach the city of canals. Some of these artists have never been represented at the Venice Biennale, as in the case of Nigeria, Antigua and Barbuda or Kiribati. They will form the proposals of this edition entitled VIVA ARTE VIVA, since according to the President of the Biennale, this time they want to thank the “artists who are able to broaden our perspective and space of our existence”.

6-Glyndebourne Festival

The British town of Glyndebourne, about 90 kilometers to the south of London, begins on May 20, has one of the most unique opera festivals in the world. Why? Because here the performances can be enjoyed in an elegant mansion in the Sussex County, with gardens where you can take a picnic sitting on the grass of the English countryside. But, wearing the appropriate clothing to go to the opera gala.

This year this exclusive event will begin with the representation of the Hypermestra opera by the Italian composer Cavalli. But this work will be accompanied by many others like La Traviata or The Clemency of Titus, because until the closing of the Glyndebourne Festival, on August 27th the programming plans to perform works of bel canto composed by Verdi, Mozart, Strauss, Donizetti or Brett Dean.

7-Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion in London

A major retrospective of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s work will open on May 27th at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A sample that will become the Basque designer’s first exhibition in Britain. And the volume and importance of it is so big that will remain open no more and no less than until February 18th, 2018.

In total, the museum will count with more than one hundred garments designed by Balenciaga and about 20 of his mythical hats. But in   Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion we can learn hidden secrets in the designer’s creations since they will show the radiographs made to the garments to discover the internal structures that create the magic and the best kept secret of Balenciaga’s designs.
