Many cosmetic products on the market are packaged in plastic containers, which generates a large amount of waste that could be avoided if companies chose to invest in more sustainable alternatives.
The high costs of research and production, along with their advantages in terms of product transportation and preservation, lead the industry to continue favoring plastic containers. However, some brands have already started opting for more eco-friendly alternatives to help combat climate change. Among them, L’Oréal has recently developed a new cardboard packaging for its cosmetics to be more sustainable.
Goal: sustainability
L’Oréal is one of the companies that is betting on sustainability in its packaging and production processes. In one of its recent initiatives, it has partnered with Albéa to create a cosmetic tube in which plastic is replaced, for the most part, by a material similar to certified biological-based paper. This innovative initiative aims to provide an alternative to traditional packaging, and although it is still only a project, its first production is scheduled for the second half of 2020.
This is not the only sustainable initiative that L’Oréal has adopted in recent years. A few months ago, it announced that it has made 38 of its factories and distribution centers carbon-neutral. Additionally, like Albéa, it is a signatory of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy. Therefore, it has committed to ensuring that by 2025, 100% of plastic packaging will be refillable, recyclable, or compostable, and 50% will come from recycled materials.
With these measures, the large company responsible for some of the most famous cosmetic brands in the world is moving towards much more responsible production and marketing. Gradually, cosmetic innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
