Vegan cosmetics have been gaining prominence in our toiletry bags and consumption philosophies. Makeup, facial, and body products without ingredients of animal origin and, of course, cruelty-free, including a unique hygiene product, perfume. In recent years, brands with vegan and natural fragrances have emerged. We highlight five of them.
Laboratory Perfumes: Unique Scents
Founded in 2011, Laboratory Perfumes creates vegan, unisex, and unique fragrances, formulated to react differently in each person and to evolve throughout the day. Both their eau de toilette and candles are made in the UK with sustainable and cruelty-free ingredients.
Laboratory Perfumes consists of 5 fragrances. Amber is a rich, woody, and complex fragrance, with ambergris mixed with spicy notes. Gorse smells like summer, opening with a citrusy burst and then giving way to coconut and cardamom. Samphire evokes the fresh air of the coast through various essences: juniper berries, citrus, lavender, rosemary, basil, verbena, oakmoss… Tonka reminds us of the scents of the forest thanks to vanilla, pink peppercorns, and zingy mandarin. Lastly, the warmest and most luxurious, Atlas, with notes of tobacco, rum, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper.
Lush: Liquid and Solid Fragrances
Lush is probably the most well-known on this list by the general public. The natural cosmetics brand includes a wide range of perfumes, body sprays, and solid perfumes in its products. All of them are vegan. In fact, Lush actively fights to end animal testing. As a result of their investment in research, they have managed to safely test 1000 Lush products on cells.
A New Brand: Maar Fragrances
Maar Fragrances is born from the hand of Marina García, who, after working with industry giants like Inditex or Puig, has ventured into the startup world with her own proposal, more natural, sustainable, vegan, and local.
Mina, Nayla, and Élise are the three fragrances of the brand. Mina is a citrusy, luminous, fresh, and cheerful perfume. Its main ingredient is bergamot oil from the Italian region of Calabria. Nayla is a tribute to the delicacy of the orange blossom that grows in Tunisia, in the Nabeul area. It is a floral and attractive fragrance. Its floral notes are mixed with a heart of neroli oil and a base of iris and vanilla. Élise is the boldest. Inspired by the blackcurrant that grows in the French region of Burgundy, it has an oriental and more opulent aroma.
All three have 97% natural ingredients, the alcohol they contain is ecological, they are not tested on animals, their packaging is recyclable in parts, they do not use cellophane, and their components come from local suppliers. Additionally, the company allocates 2% of its sales to the Save the Med Foundation, which fights for the marine regeneration of the Mediterranean.
Le Labo: Status Symbol
Le Labo was born in Grasse, the capital of perfumery on the French Riviera. But it was in New York where it grew and became the brand it is today. Its artisanal character stands out above all else. Each fragrance is mixed by hand and personalized according to the order. Its product line includes, in addition to a wide range of perfumes, body, hair, and facial products, a line for shaving, and home fragrances in the form of candles and air fresheners. Its commitment to veganism in its products is clear. In fact, on its website, you can read: “We believe it is more humane to test cosmetics on New Yorkers than on animals.”
Its most well-known fragrance is Santal 33, a unisex perfume created in 2011 and inspired by the great American myth of the West. With notes of cardamom, lily, violet, wood, and spices. The New York Times said of it that, in the circles of New York and Los Angeles, if you don’t smell like Santal, you’re nobody.
Delisea: Biodegradable Packaging
The Delisea collection consists of four vegan fragrances for women and two for men. This Spanish company is committed to environmental care in an original way. Its packaging is 100% recycled paper; the ink is ecological; the caps of the fragrances come from sustainably managed forests, and, most curiously of all, the label is made of biodegradable seed paper that can be planted. Each of its four feminine perfumes belongs to a different olfactory range: Suna is gourmand; Coral, citrusy; Sea Bloom, floral, and Adarce, oriental-floral.
