Fashion Trends Summer 2020
As we are about to face the summer season, it is time to discover the guidelines that will mark our way of dressing. From handcrafted crochet and bohemian graphics to looks that take us back to decades past through oversized disco collars, couture feathers, shorts, bold neons and more, welcome to the Summer 2020 Fashion Trends!
EYE-CATCHING OVERSIZED COLLARS
The oversized collars are the stars of shirts and jackets, a tribute to the Studio 54 era. A surprise comeback that modernizes shirts, coats and jackets at Lanvin, Ferragamo, JW Anderson. This trend is often shown with contrasting colors to stand out strongly. Because what’s the point of a super collar if you can’t really see it?
HANDMADE CROCHET
The artisanal and refreshing “crochet” is updated to replace the warm winter knit. Ultra-feminine dresses, polished suits and evening wear feel modern with a masterful crochet touch. As the fashion industry looks for ways to be more sustainable, there is something special about a “trend” that extols a slow, handcrafted technique that can be passed down from generation to generation. A treasured family heirloom that will last forever.
SENSUAL “HOT PANTS
Facing the heat, the classic shorts are cut and truecan by sensual “hot pants”. Who does not wear shorts in summer? Shorts are making a triumphant comeback on the Spring-Summer 2020 runways. From knit shorts at Hermès and Ferragamo to denim “shorts” at Rag & Bone and “spandex” at Brandon Maxwell. For those who prefer a more demure style, Chanel pairs the look with black tights.
BRIGHT NEON LIGHTS
The sun intensifies the neon styling that adds to the summer trends. What is fluorescent pink, orange, blue, green and yellow, and refuses to blend in with the crowd? All the marker-inspired neons stand out on the runways to storm the sidewalks. From Tom Ford to Christopher John Rogers and Courrèges, among others; they dye their “looks” in neon tones. Subtlety may not be one of their hallmarks, but these vibrant hues pair beautifully with black, white or beige.
SUITS WITH BERMUDA SHORTS
Faced with the classic suits seen in the winter season, the catwalks update them by pairing them with lightweight Bermuda shorts. If the idea of shorts makes you want to run, bermudas are here to save the day. Putting a twist on the classic suit, designers from Bottega Veneta, Chloé and Givenchy are embracing the short suit with bermudas for spring. Join the next wave of trend following bike shorts!
FASTENERS IN SIGHT
As an alternative to cropped tops for the more daring, the sensual “bra tops” emerge. Blouses no longer top it: the bra top officially enters the party. From crocheted designs at Christian Dior and Giambattista Valli to a more daring model at Loewe, the bikini top comes in all textures and styles. Just add a high-waisted skirt and you have the perfect summer look.
LAYERS OF RUFFLES
Last season we were emboldened in a fluctuating sea of tulle, which indicated that ball gowns were ready to combat the “tuxedo” trend. Expanding on that idea for Spring-Summer 2020, beautiful, lightweight gowns materialize in different layers of tulle or chiffon to offer volume, drama and maximum swirlability. Oscar de la Renta and Roksanda signed up for the idea by dyeing it pink, while Preen, Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior chose classic shades like black and white.
BOHEMIAN 70’S PRINTS
Turning away from innovative and recurring floral prints this season, designers are instead rescuing bohemian prints with a 70’s feel. Retro prints dominate the runways, bringing both color and pattern to all the major collections. “Vintage” wallpaper-style prints are channeled in suit form at Prada and Marc Jacobs. Christopher Kane opts for a more psychedelic print in the form of summer dresses, while Etro and Alberta Ferretti offer a more bohemian vision;
BIRDS OF PARADISE
When it comes to evening wear, no matter how much the world tries to convince you; sometimes a little black dress (LBD) just won’t do. Like birds of paradise this season, the nights are dressing us in dressy dresses and tops feathered material. While almost certainly light as air, these outfits offer a strong impact.
ESPADRILLES AND TOE SANDALS
As for footwear, the traditional espadrilles and sandals that attach to the big toe are the main summer footwear. Updated by virtually every runway designer, you’ll find them in all heel heights, with flats standing out, as well as in a myriad of styles.
