The Dart art documentary film festival can be seen from 27 November to 31 December in several cinemas in Barcelona.
Dart is one of the most special festivals in Barcelona because of its strong commitment to art and film. In fact, it is the only one that brings together both disciplines under the format of documentary film. With an exceptional programme year after year, it will celebrate its 8th edition from 27 November to 31 December with more screenings and several debates on art in our society.
This year Dart will include 3 short films and 20 feature-length documentaries, of which 15 are international and 5 are national or with national participation. Some of the most outstanding titles are I Am Martin Parr, which will open the festival on 27 November. It is a documentary by Lee Shulman about the cult British photographer Martin Parr, famous for his colourful portraits of society. Other highlights include Lolo & Sosaku – The Western Archive, by Sergio Caballero; Dahomey, by Mati Dop, which reflects on the plundering of African art in colonial France and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival; and the documentaries Tàpies, el joc de saber mirar and Elements of a Journey: Antoni Tàpies as part of the centenary of the artist’s birth.
Italy is also one of the countries featured in Dart 2024 with two documentaries of great historical value that recover two key moments in the country’s artistic past. On the one hand, Arte Povera – Notes for History, by Andrea Bettinetti, which delves into this key movement; on the other, Taking Venice, by Amel Wallach, which tells the story of the United States’ political interest in Robert Rauschenberg becoming the first American to win the Grand Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale in 1964.
This year’s edition of Dart will be held at the Cinemes Girona, the Sala Phenomena, the Zumzeig and Maldà cinemas and the cultural facilities MACBA, Disseny Hub Barcelona, The Social Hub and Laie Pau Claris. In parallel, once again this year the festival is collaborating with the online platform Filmin, where some of the titles from this year’s programme can be seen until 31 December.
In addition to the screenings, Dart is preparing a programme of activities, including Art and eroticism: a journey from Jeff Koons to Classical Art and the free day that MACBA will dedicate to the artist Renzo Martens and the Congolese artists’ collective CATPC.
